National Estuaries Week is an opportunity to celebrate the importance of estuaries to our environment and economy. Sarasota Bay is one of only 28 estuaries in the U.S. designated as estuaries of national significance.

The SBEP is one of four national estuary programs in Florida. The others include: Tampa Bay Estuary Program, Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program, and Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program. All four are members of the Association of National Estuary Programs (ANEP).

International Coastal Cleanup Day is also being celebrated Saturday, September 19 from 8am until noon with volunteers picking up litter at 30 locations from Sarasota to North Port. The effort is being coordinated by Keep Sarasota County Beautiful.

SBEP staff will be kicking off National Estuaries Week on Saturday with an effort to clean up parts of Phillippi Creek, the main tributary to Sarasota Bay. In partnership with Sarasota County, Riverview High School, Sarasota Bay Watch, SUP Sarasota, and local residents, we will be kayaking through the creek and clearing the waterway of debris.

Keep Manatee Beautiful (KMB) will acknowledge International Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, October 3 from 9am until noon. Contact KMB if you are interested in being a volunteer. Thank you to all of the volunteers that support bay stewardship year round.
