Largo Cultural Center hosts Be Floridian flamingo exhibit

LARGO – A flock of artistically-painted pink plastic yard flamingoes is roosting at the Largo Cultural Center for the month of October.

The Art of Being Floridian, the whimsical traveling exhibit, features 25 plastic flamingos painted by artists from throughout the Tampa Bay region. Each flamingo has its own name, which corresponds to its colorful personality. The flock includes “Caladium Cal,” painted by Largo craft artist Elaine Richard.

The plastic pink yard flamingo is the iconic mascot of the Tampa Bay Estuary Program’s Be Floridian campaign, which supports “Landscaping Like A Floridian” – especially the use of zero-nitrogen fertilizers to prevent pollution in the summer rainy season, and slow-release fertilizers October through May.

The Art of Being Floridian will be on display at the Largo Cultural Center, 105 Central Park Drive, throughout October. The exhibit will continue to make appearances through summer 2015 at various public facilities in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Manatee counties.
